Wind Damage to Tile Roofs

Wind damage to concrete or clay tile roofs typically includes tiles that are displaced, missing or shattered. Wind does not gently pry roof tiles loose and leave them in place and not otherwise visibly affected. Tiles can be shattered during severe windstorms due to tiles from other roof areas displacing and impacting the roof tiles.

The following photograph shows wind damage to a concrete tile roof. Note the missing and displaced ridge tiles (center). Displaced ridge tiles and broken tile pieces are on other areas of the roof:

The following photograph shows wind damage to a clay tile roof. Several ridge tiles are missing or displaced:

The photograph below shows damage to a concrete tile consistent with impact. Note the cracks emanating from one point on the tile:

Often a small chip is visible at the surfaces of the tile at that point, which is further evidence of impact:

Wind damage from fluttering can also occur to mechanically fastened roof tiles. This damage results in visible displacement of multiple field tiles throughout a roof slope, usually accompanied by chips in the edges of the tiles. This condition is much more obvious when looking towards the overlying edges of the field tiles:
