Structural Components
The structural components of a building work together to safely support and transfers loads to the ground. All structures must resist gravity loads, including their own weight, occupants, furniture, and environmental effects such as snow and wind. These loads are typically carried by horizontal elements such as joists and beams, which transfer forces to vertical elements such as columns and bearing walls. The vertical elements then transfer the accumulated loads down to the foundations, which distributes them into the supporting soil.
In addition to gravity, buildings must also withstand lateral forces caused by wind and seismic activity. This is achieved through components such as shear walls and diaphragms. These components provide stiffness and strength in the horizontal direction, limiting sway and preventing structural instability. Floor and roof diaphragms play a critical role by collecting lateral forces and distributing them to the vertical resisting elements. Together, these components ensure that the building maintains its shape and integrity under both vertical and horizontal loading.
The effectiveness of a structural system depends not only on the individual components but also on how they interact as a whole. Connections between beams, columns, walls, and foundations are essential for creating a continuous load path. Proper detailing, material selection, and proportioning help limit or eliminate deflection, cracking, vibration, and other potential issues.
